The Who You Are Is What You Do Approach

There are many views about how a person can find their true self. Some people go on long journeys of exploration when asking themselves ‘Who am I?’ Sometimes this can help, sometimes it can lead to going in circles.

Another view focuses on how a person translates their true self into action. It is for them to ask: ‘What do I actually do?’ Whilst a person may be a mixture of strengths, feeling and thoughts, it is:

To focus on what they actually do – such as how you behave
and treat other people – during their time on the planet.

This is because – whilst a person may have many aspects to their personality – most people only see what a person actually does. It is to follow the philosophy of: ‘By their fruits you shall know them’.

Some people may object to this approach by using the phrase: ‘Are you a human being or a human doing?’ But a person’s being is translated into action by the way they behave towards themselves and other people.

There are many ways to help a person to focus on: a) who they are; b) what they want to do in life. One approach is to invite them to explore the following questions.

What do you think is important in life? What are the principles you want to follow in your life? What do you want to do in your life? How do you want to encourage other people?

What do you enjoy doing? What are your strengths? How can you use these in a positive way? What do you want to give to people during your time on the planet?

Imagine that you may want to follow elements of the ‘who you are is what you do’ approach. How could you do this in your own way? What may happen as a result of taking these steps?

If you wish try tackling the exercise on this theme. This invites you to complete the following sentences.
